Here's some running sketches I did, ironically, really quickly.

This was meant as a help/critique image for :iconwrathofautumn: when he asked for help critiquing his work here [link]

To Mr. Wrath:

I drew the lines on his shoulder really long to help show you the angles of the hips and waist from each other. Also, notice that while the right leg is forward the right arm is back at an almost equal extreme.

Also, due mostly to perspective (which in this case is pretty forced), when running towards the page the back leg appears to tuck behind the front one. Doing this gives the illusion of taking a step forward.

There's a lot more going on here too, but for the most part I hope this is clear enough.

No problem. I'm glad it can help someone still.

Guh, this helps me out a lot! I am always at a loss on how to draw people running and make it look realistic enough. Thank you!

If you really want a good reference for animation/posing/all around awesome, check out The Animators Survival Kit by Richard Williams. It's expensive though so see if it's in your library or if they can order it in from another library. Or go to Chapters and read a few pages.

It's a good read for animators and all artists alike. Also, never shy from reference. Check out youtube for people running and just clarify the shot you want. The best thing to do is find a wall with almost a grid like pattern behind it (like bricks only more organised) then video tape a person running by it or take pictures. Then you can look at the hight of each part of the body in each position of the run using the grid like wall behind them as a reference.

Huh, never thought about the wall/grid thing before. ^U^

I saw it in an old anatomy book once, it was awesome. I wish I could remember the name of it though.

Oooooooooooh! :D Well the character in the drawing has digitigrade feet. So how would that affect the running position based on this model?

Not much at all; think of it as running on your toes. Look at the drawing and pretend his feat are longer. Poof, problem solved!
